Hail and Well Met 8 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Hi Everyone,

I recently discovered TheGameMasterShow podcast and downloaded them all to my ipod. I have been working my way through them from the beginning. I just drove from NY to MI today (for a weeklong conference) and so listened to 9 hours straight! I am still way back in August 07, but am finding them very well done - can't wait to get more up-to-date.

I hope to participate in these here forums quite a bit, so.... get used to me

Cheers,
Sam

Oops, I meant to flash my gaming cred before I submitted -

I've been roleplaying for about 25 years, with a few years here and there when I didn't do much. Yes, I started way back in the day with redbox D&D and went on from there.

I've played the following systems:
D&D, AD&D, 2nd ed, 4E
Traveller (old school)
Gamma World
Paranoia
Star Frontiers
Star Trek
Ringworld
Car Wars (though not really and RPG)
Boot Hill
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Robotech (old school)
GURPS
d20 Modern
Twilight2000

So you can see my problem - I have been out of it for a while and the only recent game I have played is 4E D&D.

Listening to the podcast APs has given me great inspiration to try many of the new game sout there - Thanks!

I did that very same thing not to long ago! I want to get my little brother hooked to. How are you finding hopping from 2e to 4e? I started with 2e myself and am now sticking with 3.5 for finacial reasons.

I think it was much easier for me to jump into 4e since I didn't have a huge amount of $ invested in 3.5. I completely understand those that want to stick with 3e for the short term because of the monetary investment.

I do think that 4e is a decent system and most people will eventually switch, regardless of all the complaints I've been hearing. It is obvious that WotC put a lot of thought into the changes they made, which wasn't true for 3e and therefore 3.5 had to be implemented. Also, it would have been very difficult for me to jump into 3 or 3.5 right now since there is sooooooo much out there - I wouldn't know where to start. I feel like I would have to make such a huge investment in the beginning, just to get up to speed, that it wouldn't ultimately be worth it. Honestly, I wanted to get back into D&D three years ago, but that kept me from it. I was actually happy when 4e was released for that reason.

I find 4e very easy to play and get back into RPGs - but, alas, I am already experiencing the whole "gotta get the next book so I am up-to-date and have the most complete collection" feeling. This is the thing I hate about RPGs in general, and D&D in particular, since it seems to be the worst offender in this respect. I think, also, that releasing so many things every year just makes it hard for newbies to get the hang of it.

I think at heart I am an old school 1e player. I still have my 1e books and modules and would be very happy to play a 1e campaign, but I just can't find any players around where I live to play with. It was easy to find 4e players though, so it was an easy decision to make in the moment.

lorddillon, welcome to the show and to the forums. Sorry about not welcoming you sooner; but with a new job and Origins in the fix things can get a little crazy. But better late then never right?

Looking at your list of games I couldn't help but smile to see Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on there. Big fan of TMNT, not so much the RPG but maybe I need to give it a second look now that I am older.

Glad to hear that the show's APs have exposed you to some new stuff and even inspired you to give them a try. Always awesome to hear that. A major point to all of this is to get people excited about GMing, gaming, and learning more about both. Trying new things is one of the best ways to do that. Score one for the good guys.

Can't speak much to 4th edition. I am one of the old guard that hasn't switched over. In fact in saddens me a little. D&D has been such a big part of my life, played since I was 9, that stepping away from it is weird. But to be honest it doesn't feel like D&D to me anymore and it didn't jell with me. But I am glad that you are enjoying it.

Anyways thanks again for finding our little show and participating here on the forums. Looking forward to your input.
